Newbie’s Guide and Glossary to Dumpster Rental: Part I

Sizes

There are several dumpster sizes to choose from. Each size is best suited to a certain type of project. Each dumpster holds cubic yards of space for rubbage. A cubic yard is 3 feet by 3 feet wide by 3 feet high – roughly the size of a household stove. Generally, there are four main sizes to choose from: 10, 20, 30, or 40-yard dumpsters. However, the sizes available can depend on the rental company you work with so be sure to consult with the company first. In addition, some companies offer sizes beyond the four mentioned above.

  • 10-yard dumpsters are one of the smallest sizes to choose from. They are generally used for junk removal, garage cleanouts, and small remodeling projects. They can also be used for smaller quantities of brick, tile, concrete, and dirt.
  • 20-yard dumpsters are often used for disposing of shingles, and furniture. These dumpsters are also suited for medium or larger sized home remodeling projects.
  • 30-yard dumpsters are well suited for full home cleanouts, along with new home construction.
  • 40-yard dumpsters are generally used for large demolition projects. They are also used for large residential construction, and commercial construction.

Types of Dumpsters

Beyond different sizes of dumpsters, there are several types of dumpsters to choose from. Each type accepts certain types of materials. For example, some dumpsters only accept construction waste, while others are designated for household waste. Knowing what type of dumpster you need will help you to avoid incurring additional charges as well as ensuring proper disposal.

Construction Dumpsters

Often called a roll-off dumpster, a construction dumpster is the most popular option for most sites. It offers an open-top for throwing in rubbish, a large door on one end for loading heavier materials, and wheels on the bottom for rolling away once full. These dumpsters come in a variety of sizes.

Commercial Dumpsters

Commercial dumpsters are commonly used as trash containers behind restaurants, apartments, and other businesses. These are generally used as permanent containers and have lids to prevent vermin and odors. They are picked up weekly or monthly to dispose of the garbage. Commercial dumpsters are usually smaller than roll-off dumpsters and come in sizes such as 2, 4, 6, or 8 yards.

Residential Dumpsters

Residential dumpsters are for specific residential uses. They are mostly used for renovations, as well as cleanups.

Dirt-Only Dumpsters

Dirt-only dumpsters are primarily used for landscaping projects and soil compound removal. They are available in several sizes and have different weight capacities for dirt.

Dumpster In a Bag

A dumpster bag is an alternative to other types of steel dumpsters. Even so, these bags can still handle heavy loads. It can be an excellent choice for smaller cleanups as dumpster bags are often cheaper. However, not all rental companies offer this option so be sure to check with your rental company.
