Some places manage to generate a huge amount of trash each day, and a regular large dumpster rental, even a huge 40-yard roll-off dumpster, cannot handle the load. In these cases, a compactor is needed.
What is a Compactor?
A compactor is a special type of dumpster that uses a hydraulic crusher to compress the trash generated at that location. Compactors are widely used within the waste management industry to reduce the volume of trash and free up space for additional waste. Most people think if you’ve seen one compactor, you’ve seen them all, but that is not true. There are two major types of compactors and there are some significant differences between them. These are stationary compactors and self-contained compactors.
Stationary Compactors
A stationary compactor is a compactor that is fixed in-place that has a closed roll-off dumpster attached to it. Once the roll-off dumpster is full, the dumpster can be detached and hauled away and replaced with an empty one.
Stationary compactors are used for dry waste, for example there is one type of compactor named a “cardboard baler” that is designed to handle cardboard and other paper-like materials. These compactors are often attached to the outside by chutes from within the building (usually near shipping and receiving) and operated there as well.
Because stationary compactors are used for dry waste, there cannot be a risk of liquids contaminating the load. Liquids have different requirements in order to dispose of them properly. For this reason, stationary compactors are best for these types of businesses (just to name a few):
- Hospitals and medical offices
- Hotels and motels
- Manufacturing plants
- Office buildings
- Retail stores
Self-Contained Compactors
The main difference between a stationary and a self-contained compactor is that a self-contained compactor is a roll-off dumpster with a compactor installed within it. It operates as a single unit, and when it gets full, the entire unit is hauled away. Another difference between a self-contained compactor and a stationary compactor is that a self-contained compactor is designed for waste that produces liquids as the waste gets compressed. Liquid waste needs to be disposed of in a completely different way so that it remains safe. To do this, self-contained compactors are equipped with a separate container to capture the liquid waste so it can be disposed properly.
Here are a few venues that self-contained compactors are ideal for:
- Food courts
- Hospitals
- Hotels & Resorts
- Malls & Shopping Centers
- Nursing Homes
- Restaurants
- Supermarkets
