In the United States, over 90% of all products shipped use corrugated cardboard boxes. As a result, cardboard and paper make up around 41% of the solid waste generated each year. This equals about 850 million tons of cardboard and paper, equivalent to one billion trees, are thrown away each year.
This is an incredible waste of resources when you consider that recycling cardboard uses only 75% of the energy it takes to produce new cardboard. Plus, the recycling process produces 50% less sulfur dioxide than making new cardboard. Not to mention that cardboard fiber can be recycled again and again. So recycling is a better option than sending cardboard to the landfill. But did you know that you can get paid top price for recycling your cardboard? You can by participating in the Nationwide Cardboard Pickup Program.

Specifications About Cardboard for Program
Not all cardboard can be recycled. Only new and used corrugated cardboard—cardboard with brown or white “ridges” or corrugated line–can be recycled.
Cardboard that cannot be recycled includes:
- Cardboard that has a wax or plastic coating
- Gray or yellowish boxes without corrugated line
- Non-corrugated cardboard such as shoe boxes, cereal boxes
- Cardboard wrapped with stretch wrap or bound by metal straps or contain styrofoam, foam rubber, and plastic within them–all need to be removed before recycling
- Cardboard contaminated with food or other waste–such as the grease and cheese in pizza boxes
Anything else that came with the box, such as packing tape, labels, staples, etc., do not need to be removed from the box.
