Last week, we discussed the different sizes and types of dumpsters in Part I. This week, we will be discussing more terminology related to dumpster rental.
Landfill Fees
Most of the waste put in your dumpster ends up in local landfills. Local governments run these landfills and charge a fee to dispose of the waste. This is known as the landfill fee. This fee is generally charged per ton of waste. Some companies include this fee in the rental cost, but others do not. Be sure to clarify if this fee is included in your rental contract.
Clean Load
A clean load is a dumpster filled with a single type of recyclable material such as plastic, cardboard, asphalt, concrete, or other types of waste. This allows the rental company to have the load recycled rather than taken to a landfill. While quite common, not all dumpster rental companies offer this eco-friendly option, so be sure to check with your rental company if you are interested in this option.
Mixed Load
Mixed load refers to filling a dumpster with several types of recyclables. Unlike a clean load, this load needs to be sorted out at a sorting facility to separate out the different kinds of recyclables. Despite its surge in popularity, this option is generally not available in most cities in the US, however, it never hurts to check.
Dumpster Permit
If you intend to have your rental placed on the side of a city street, be sure to check with your city to see if a permit is required. Some rental companies take care of the permit requirements, but not all do. Be sure to check with your rental company about the permit requirements. If you plan to place your dumpster on private property, a permit is not necessary.
Maximum Weight
The weight capacity of a dumpster is known also known as the maximum weight, or the maximum tonnage. Your rental company will let you know the weight capacity of the dumpster you rent, and also give you a general idea of how much material is needed to reach the maximum weight.
Overage
An overage is the fee you incur if you exceed the weight capacity on your dumpster rental. This fee is in addition to the contracted price for the rental.
Prohibited Items
Prohibited items are items that you cannot dispose of in your rental. Items on the prohibited list generally include motor oil, batteries, paint, tires, and other chemicals. Be sure to ask your rental company for the list of prohibited items before rental to avoid any additional fees.
