With many homeowners spending more time at home, improvement projects are at an all-time high. If you are considering a renovation project, here are a few others you may want to add to the list. Remodeling projects vary in difficulty, so before trying to copy a DIY video and demo your bathroom or kitchen, take a moment to assess the dollars, time and skills needed to complete the project.
Weekend Projects
Unclog rain gutters. Clogged gutters can create a drainage problem over the long winter and can cause rot to start at the roof line.
Paint fencing or brick wall. This is an easy and cost-effective way to really cause a nice dramatic effect to your home. Renting a power washer might be helpful to clean the surface and remove old paint.
Clean out the garage. Maybe buy premade standing shelving and bins or opt to build your own shelves but you will be surprised how quickly this organizes your garage. You will likely have a few trips to Goodwill or a waste facility to make. A roll off dumpster might be need as well.
Replace damaged vinyl siding. Your siding protects the home from water, temperature and insects from entering your wall cavity. You can replace your siding easily and make it as good as new in about 15 minutes with a $5 zip tool.
Week Projects
Raised garden beds. Using pressure treated wood, creating raised bed gardens is a fun DYI project.to raise your own vegetables. A 2nd project for this is adding your own irrigation with PVC or underground water hose. There are dozens of how-to videos online.
Bathroom update. You don’t have to go all out to give your bathroom a brand-new look. Just replacing the sink and vanity will make a big difference. Add new lighting fixtures, towel bars, and mirror, the bathroom will have a new feeling.
Seal the Attic Leaks. Is the time of year to seal the leaks in your attic. Air leaks around the joists and rafters will overwork your furnace in keeping the house warm. Tubes of sealant and an application ‘gun’ are inexpensive and easy to use.
Month Projects
Resurfacing Kitchen Cabinets. Replacing kitchen cabinets is costly and major work, usually requiring a contractor to measure, order and install. However, repainting your current cabinets can provide the same new look while saving thousands of dollars.
New Flooring. Replacing old carpet or tile is not your typical DIY project as there are many ‘tools of the trade’ to study, but if you go step-by-step, is certainly a project a couple can tackle. Planning, measuring, and patience is the key to success.
