COVID-19 had us cooped up at home with the kids for an extended period of time, but now that the kids are going back to school, you finally have a little free time on your hands without the kids underfoot, and you need to get the home reorganized before winter and the holiday season.
Kids Room Cleanup
Go through each kid’s room and remove broken or no-longer-used toys and games from the room. Also go through the kids’ drawers and pull out clothes that no longer fit or are too worn to keep. Be sure to look in closets, under beds, and in desk drawers to make sure that you find all of the trash and refuse that has been collecting there since March.
Common Area Decluttering
Because of all the time spent at home in recent months, there is bound to be some clutter that has accumulated that you just don’t notice anymore because it has been there for so long. Go through each common area: living room, family room, dining room, kitchen, and bathrooms and clear off every surface. Put items back in their places and throw out the objects that you no longer need.
Utility Rooms/Basements
These are places where we put everything that we don’t know what to do with over the short term, and then tends to pile up and become an out-of-control mess if left unchecked for many months. Go through old boxes, remove the things you no longer need or use. Also look for broken items or items missing parts (electronics, old toys and games, projects, supplies) and get them out of these areas as well.
Garages, Attics and Other Storage Spaces
Garages, attics, and other storage spaces such as outdoor sheds, workshops, or crawl spaces also tend to collect a lot of junk that is no longer needed or used. Collect it all and remove it from the area.
Move All Junk to a Central Location
Take all of the trash, debris, old items, etc., that you have collected from all of these spaces and put them in one spot. This will give you an idea of how much stuff you need to deal with. Is there anything that you can sell or give away? Is there anything that can be recycled? If so, remove that stuff from the pile and make a plan to deal with it in the next 48 hours.
Look at the remainder. Is there enough there to justify a roll-off dumpster rental? If not, what about asking your neighbors if they need to get rid of any junk? Maybe you can rent the dumpster together. Then make a phone call to schedule a delivery for an open top dumpster rental for drop off.
