Properly disposing of electronics can seem like a daunting task, but there are actually several different options available. Different types of electronics are still valuable even after use and many can be recycled or donated. If not, there are still a variety of options for throwing them out responsibly. This is the first article in our two-part series on proper electronics disposal. Be sure to check back next week for part two of this blog series.
Before Throwing Electronics Away
Before you dispose of any electronic, be sure to remove your personal information from the device. For a cell phone, be sure to do a factory reset on your phone and remove your SIM card. For your computer, wipe your hard drive.
In addition to protecting your information, you should check to see if your device has any rechargeable batteries. Those should be recycled separately as they contain harmful substances that shouldn’t go to the landfills.
Options for Disposal
Dumpster: If you’re throwing out old electronics as part of a larger cleanup, renting a dumpster is a simple way to get rid of everything simultaneously. You can throw away old electronics, furniture, and other items in one easy step and not worry about separating electronics out to send to an individual collection site. Keep in mind that not all electronics are allowed in a dumpster so be sure to check on the local regulations and fees before disposing.
Curbside Collection: If you have just a handful of items to dispose of, check with your curbside collection agency. This is another easy, low-cost way of disposal. It is important to keep in mind that collection may be limited to only a certain number of items or may not be available in your area.
Local Hazardous Waste Facility: If curbside collection isn’t available for electronics and you don’t have enough junk to rent a dumpster, consider using your local hazardous waste facility. There, your old electronics will be disassembled to be properly disposed of. To find a disposal facility, contact your city’s public works department or do a simple search online.
