While quarantine recommendations are slowly being lifted, it is still a good idea to still shelter in place and protect yourself and your loved ones. But the better weather and being cooped up at home is making everyone a little stir-crazy right now. Here are some excellent home improvement project ideas to make this time a bit more manageable.
1 – Plant a Garden or All New Flowerbeds
Being stuck at home isn’t completely bad. If you haven’t done so already, why not plant a vegetable garden in your backyard? Even if you have a small tract of land, you can set up a container garden or convert a small section of your lawn into a garden. Planting even just a few tomato plants or herbs such as parsley, oregano, or cilantro to help freshen up your summer meals can make a world of difference for your mind and body.
Installing a new flower bed can add color and vibrancy to a home with very little effort. If you don’t have a lot of space, consider tearing out some of your existing bushes and shrubs to make space for new flower beds to freshen up the look of your landscaping.
2 – Plan a Larger Home Renovation Project
While things are still beginning to open back up, now might be the best time to begin looking at a major home renovation project such as home addition, a complete kitchen remodel, or a major outdoor project such as a deck or pool. Whether you are going to do-it-yourself, or hire contractors to do it, you need to take time to think about what specific features you want to have as part of the finished project, put together supply lists, get quotes from contractors, and even figure out plans about what you will do while the renovation is happening. For example, how are you going to eat while the kitchen renovation is underway?
3 – Repurpose “Wasted” Space
Do you have an unfinished basement that could be renovated and made into useful living space? What about a spare bedroom, or unused section of a garage? Now is the time to tackle these projects, especially if you are working from home and spending a lot more time around the house in general. Transforming unused space into a playroom, family entertainment center, or hobby workshop will not only provide additional living space, but also add value to your home.
4 – Freshen Up Your Interior Decor
Now is a great time to rip out the dated trim, old carpet, and wallpaper and replace it with new trim, restored wood floors (or install new laminate flooring), and paint the walls with new vibrant colors.
5 – Complete a Massive Decluttering Initiative
This isn’t your average, ordinary clean out the garage or attic project. This is a whole house and yard top to bottom decluttering initiative. Check out last week’s post Decluttering During COVID-19 for details on this project.
