There are three major types of dumpsters available for waste management:
- Stay at Home Dumpsters
- Roll-Off Dumpsters
- Compactors
Stay at Home Dumpsters
These are similar to the trash cans you can buy at any Home Depot or Lowes; except they are larger. These containers can hold anywhere from 2 up to 10 cubic yards of waste. These are primarily designed for weekly on-site waste collection. Smaller containers (2 cubic yard containers) are typically wheeled and can be moved to the curb or truck for weekly trash pick-up.
There are two different types of stay-at-home dumpsters. Front-end-loaders, containers that waste collection trucks pick-up from the front, and rear loaders which back up to pick up the containers at the rear of the vehicle.
Open Roll-Off Dumpsters
These are self-contained dumpsters that are “rolled-off” the back of a truck and then picked up to remove the waste once full. These are much larger containers, anywhere from 10 to 40 cubic yards and are specifically designed for sites that generate a high volume of trash, or for short-term, limited projects needing additional waste removal capabilities.
Most roll-off dumpsters are quoted at a lump sum price based on the size of the dumpster and a weight limit for the waste within it. Additional fees may be assessed for exceeding the weight limit, mixing trash types, and the distance to the waste management location.
Compactors
These are specially designed dumpsters that incorporate a hydraulic “crusher” to compact the trash generated at the location. These are for sites that generate a huge volume of trash each day. There are two types of trash compactors–self-contained and stationary compactors.
Self-contained trash compactors are single units that have a compactor attached as part of the roll-off dumpster. These units are picked up and taken away once it is full similar to how open top roll off dumpsters are managed.
The second type of compactor is a stationary compactor that is paired with a closed roll-off dumpster. These compactors are anchored in a specific location and the closed roll-off dumpsters are detached and hauled away when full and replaced with an empty container.
